*** DAFFODIL FESTIVAL SUSPENDS OUT-OF-TOWN TRAVEL ***

On July 14, 2008 the Daffodil Festival Board of Directors suspended all travel for the remainder of the 2008 festival season.  The Board was faced with a funding shortfall for the 2008 budget, therefore the Board's only course of action was to suspend all out of town festival appearances for the remainder of the season.  Although travel to other festivals is a small portion of the festivals overall budget, the lack of additional funding sources required this drastic action.  The Board of Directors are busy exploring new avenues of funding and reviewing if a lack of community support means the festival may need to change directions or reduce activities.  Currently the festival helps to attract regional and national attention to the Pierce County/Puyallup Valley area and welcomes and hosts dignitaries and guests from other area festivals.  The Daffodil Royalty program also provides scholarship opportunities and allows the Royalty to act as Ambassadors for all of Pierce County as they make appearances throughout the Pacific Northwest.

Recognizing the changing financial climate the Festival Board recently hired a part-time Funding / Community Relations Director to help rebuild the festival's budget for the 2009 festival year.  The Board is hopeful this new position will help rebuild the festival program and assure the festival continues for years to come.

The Daffodil Festival, a 501(c)(3) Organization, will celebrate its 75th year during the 2008 festival season and takes pride in calling the great State of Washington, specifically Pierce County, its home.  The Festival is an annual event that culminates in April with a Grand Floral Street Parade, which travels through the cities of Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting, all in one day.  The Theme for 2008 will be "75" Years, Remembering Your First Daffodil Parade".

Our Grand Marshal for the 2008 Parade is Patricia Ritchie Randall who was the flower girl for the first Daffodil Royal Court in 1934.  The Festival is honored to have Miss Randall participate in the 75th annual Daffodil Parade.

I don’t remember the first Daffodil Parade I was carried in, but it was in 1947.  My family always watched the Daffodil Parade at 21st and Market in Tacoma. It wasn’t until years later that I started to recognize the various parts of the parade. I remember the Cushman Indian Hospital had a rainbow with a waterfall of real water that leaked onto the ground causing a Tacoma Motorcycle Police Officer to slide into the crowd. I remember waiting for the Tacoma Public Works to paint the line on the street that you had to stay behind during the parade. I remember the Boys Scouts, as they lined the entire Tacoma parade .  At that time the route followed Market Street to St. Helens, then down Broadway to Jefferson then down Commerce to Pacific Avenue and ending at  24th. It was not unusual to have over 300,000 people lining the parade route.
It was the years before TV when the Tacoma News Tribune published an entire section of parade photographs. Eight whole pages not counting the front page was not unusual.
I sometimes get a little emotional about the history and the value the Daffodil Parade provides to the entire Puyallup Valley. I have been involved with the parade all of my life, beginning with the City of Fife and then the Puyallup Tribe’s float which began in 1978.  I am currently a Daffodilian and head of the Puyallup Tribal Float and its associated contingencies.
I remember proudly the first year that Chief Leschi High School had its first Daffodil Princess. I remember the year that the Tribal float won the Sweepstakes for the first time and all the times since. I remember when I took over the Queen’s float so that all the Princesses could ride on the same float with their Queen. I remember the start of the Educator of the Year program and the necessary float to go with it.
I sometimes ask what happened to all the community spirit and pride in their Daffodil Floats. I remember the days of the City Light Queen’s float, the business floats from the various lumber companies and various businesses about town. Throughout, we have maintained a proud and glorious history of 75 years of Daffodil Parades. I ask that you remember this, as we prepare for our 75th Diamond Jubilee Year and “Remembering your First Daffodil Parade”.
